Vietnam and Cambodia – Mekong Riverboat Cruise

This 15 day itinerary combines Vietnam and Cambodia with a leisurely riverboat cruise along the Mekong.

Highlights:  Ho Chi Minh – Phnom Penh –  Kampong Chhang – Kampong Cham – Siem Reap – Angkor Wat

Day 1

Ho Chi Minh

Upon arrival at the airport, your driver and guide will meet you for the transfer to your hotel in Ho Chi Minh City, your base for the first few nights.

Ho Chi Minh is today Vietnam's largest city, an amalgam of modern skyscrapers with oriental pagodas, where office workers in business suits mingle side by side with those wearing traditional palm-leaf conical hats.

Day 2

Ho Chi Minh

Your full day tour starts in China Town and Binh Tay Market and includes a visit to ThienHau, a 150 year old Chinese Temple, followed by the remarkable sites of the War Remnants Museum. In the afternoon, visit the Reunification Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral and the historic Central Post Office.

In the evening, we include a street food tour by motorbike with plenty of opportunities to sample some of the many foods on offer and learn about the history and cultural significance of each dish.

Day 3

Ho Chi Minh

Excursion to the Great Cao Dai Holy Temple, a place of pilgrimage for South Vietnamese people and for those who are interested in Caodaism.

Afternoon visit to the famous Cu Chi tunnels, 75km northwest of Ho Chi Minh City, an area that played an important role during Vietnam's wars for independence and reunification.

Day 4

Ho Chi Minh

Free day to explore Ho Chi Minh in your own time.

Day 5

Mekong River Cruise

Transfer to the Mekong River to board your riverboat.

We offer a variety of riverboat boat cruises from short 3 nights journeys to Phnom Penh or longer cruises to Siem Reap. We will adapt your itinerary according to your preference.

Day 6

Mekong River Cruise

Morning visit to Cai Be, with a colourful floating market. In the afternoon take an exciting Sampan boat excursion to Sa Dec via Vinh Long, along canals and backwaters and see the local market and the ancient house of Huyn Thuy Le.

Day 7

Mekong River Cruise

Excursion to a tribal village and a catfish farm at Chau Doc. In the afternoon cross into Cambodia.

Day 8

Phnom Penh

Arrival at Phnom Penh for a tour of the city with your own private cyclo - a cycle rickshaw. There is much to choose from in this attractive former French city: the Royal Palace, the National Museum with its excellent Khmer collections, the Russian and Central markets, various temples and monasteries, perhaps a drink at the Foreign Correspondents club, or at the Raffles Le Royale Elephant Bar.

In the afternoon, there is an optional excursion (by coach) to the Killing Fields and to the Khmer Rouge's S21 detention centre, the grim Tuol Sleng Prison.

Day 9

Kampong Chhang

Continue the journey to Kampong Chhnang either by riverboat along the Tonle River or by road depending on water levels.

Day 10

Kampong Cham

Continue by riverboat along the Mekong to Kampong Cham, an important provincial capital with French colonial buildings, bustling markets and an attractive setting. There is a stop for a walk around the little-known Chong Koh silk-weaving village and in the afternoon visit another village, Peam Chi Kang.

Day 11

Kampong Cham

Morning excursion to the hilltop temple of Wat Hanchey. In the afternoon visit the Twin Holy mountains of Phnom Pros and Phnom Srey (Man and Woman Hill) and the ecotourism village of Choeungkok supported by the French-Cambodian NGO, Amica.

Day 12

Siem Reap

Disembark from your riverboat cruise and transfer by coach to Siem Reap where you will be met and driven to your hotel, your base for three nights.

Day 13

Siem Reap

Free morning; afternoon excursion to explore the fortified city of Angkor Thom, built by Angkor's greatest king Jayavarman VII who ruled from 1181 to 1201. Also, explore the Bayon, Baphuon, Phimeanakas, and the Terraces of the Elephants and Leper King.

Visit also the majestic Ta Phrom. built in 1186 and dedicated to the mother of Jayavarman VII. Ta Phrom is a temple of towers, closed courtyards and narrow corridors. Unlike the other temples of Angkor, Ta Phrom has been left to the elements and looks very much like the other temples must have looked when ‘rediscovered’ by Henri Mouhot in the 1860s.

Day 14

Angkor Wat

Early morning departure to visit Angkor Wat avoiding the heat of the day. This is the largest and most breath-taking monument at Angkor. Built as the funerary temple for Suryavarman II, who ruled from 1112 to 1152. Returning to the hotel for a late breakfast and the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 15

Depart Siem Reap

Departure transfer to the airport in time to check-in for your international flight.
