This three week sample Cambodia and Vietnam holiday travels from Siem Reap to the Vietnamese coast, a great itinerary of discovery.
Highlights: Siem Reap – Angkor Wat – Phnom Penh – Halong Bay – Hue – Hoi An – Ho Chi Minh – Phu Quoc
You will be met on arrival at Siem Reap and driven to your hotel. The evening is free to explore on your own, we suggest you venture out to Pub Street and a visit to the Siem Reap Night Market.
Early morning tour of Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and the temples of Bayon, Baphoun, Phimean Akas, the Royal Enclosure, Terrace of Elephants and Leper King. In the afternoon explore Ta Phrom by tuk-tuk, finishing your day tour with sunset at Bakheng Hill.
Excursion to local ruins
Beng Mealea is a seldom-visited ruin within a spectacular jungle setting. After lunch visit Banteay Srei, loosely translated as "Citadel of Women" which houses some of the finest and best-preserved examples of classical Khmer bas-relief and Preah Khan with its labyrinth of grey, decaying stone courtyards that are slowly being reclaimed by the jungle.
Kampong Kleang & Phnom Penh
Morning excursion to the fishing village of Kampong Kleang, with houses on stilts. In the afternoon transfer to Siem Reap airport for the flight to Phnom Penh.
You will be met on arrival and driven to your hotel.
Exploring Phnom Penh by cyclo - a traditional cycle rickshaw. The tour includes the holy site of Wat Phnom where a 14th century stupa and pagoda stand, the tallest religious structure in the city. The tour includes stops at the Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda and the National Museum.
Afternoon visit to the Tuol Sleng Prison and to the Killing Fields for a reminder of the dark side of Cambodia's recent history.
A culinary tour in the morning to learn about traditional Cambodian cuisine, fried spiders, perhaps, or noodles, papaya salad, and nom krok (made of rice and coconut juice cooked in a clay pan) or nom bort (sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf), mangosteen and jackfruit.
Afternoon visit to the Apsara Arts Association which teaches Cambodian dance and music to disadvantaged and orphaned children.
Fly to Hanoi
Departure transfer to Phnom Penh airport for your flight to Hanoi, where you will be met on arrival and driven to your hotel.
Visit some of the key Buddhist temples and pagodas of the Hanoi region, including one of the oldest in Vietnam, Dau Pagoda which dates back to the 3rd Century.
Travel to Ha Long Bay and board your boat, a wooden junk built in the traditional style and set sail to explore the beautiful bay, classified as a World Heritage Site in 1994.
Overnight on board.
Halong Bay - Hue
Continue to explore the bay and islands (and kayaking if weather permits) before returning to the harbour after lunch for the journey to Ha Noi airport in time for the flight to Hue.
Arrival transfer to your hotel.
Excursion by dragon boat on the Perfume River to visit the Thien Mu Pagoda and continue by road to visit the tombs of the emperors Tu Duc and Khai Dinh. In the afternoon you will visit the Forbidden Purple City.
There will be a short excursion by cyclo rickshaw on returning to Hue to visit the Dong Ba market.
Transfer along the mountainous coast of central Vietnam via the Hai Van Pass and the Marble Mountains to reach the ancient fishing village of Hoi An.
Afternoon walking tour of Hoi An, taking in historical houses and temples and the Japanese bridge. As Hoi An is known for its extraordinary talent in tailoring, it is worth exploring the cloth market.
Excursion to My Son, a UNESCO archaeological site, which was an imperial city during the Cham dynasty, between the 4th and 12th centuries.
Much of My Son's architecture was destroyed by aerial bombing during the Vietnam War. Despite the damage, My Son is still very much worth a visit.
Ho Chi Minh
Departure transfer to Da Nang airport for your flight to Ho Chi Minh City where you will be met on arrival.
Afternoon tour to explore the Reunification Palace, the War Remnants Museum, drive through the old colonial centre and see the Post Office, Notre Dame Cathedral and City Hall.
Ho Chi Minh
Excursion to the Cu Chi tunnels, 75km northwest of Ho Chi Minh City, an area that played an important role during Vietnam's wars for independence and reunification. The excursion continues to Tay Ninh where you will visit the main church of Cao Daism, hopefully arriving in time to witness the colourful spectacle of the noon mass.
Return to Ho Chi Minh City in the afternoon.
Ho Chi Minh
A full day's excursion with a boat cruise from Ben Tre along a tributary of the Mekong. The itinerary includes a short walk to visit various local cottage industries such as a brick kiln, fruit orchard, a coconut workshop and other coconut products by the local cottage industries.
The boat stops at a quiet village to visit a mat weaving house. After lunch, board a sampan for a trip along narrow canals and a cycle ride to Mr Khanh’s house. Khanh is a passionate collector of antiques collector and his house full of fascinating artefacts.
Return to Ho Chi Minh City in the afternoon.
The “emerald island” of Phu Quoc is the largest in southern Vietnam, located in the Gulf of Thailand. Phu Quoc is largely undeveloped and offers an appealing combination of laid-back charm, tropical rainforest and untouched remote beaches with calm blue waters and fringed with coconut trees.
Round trip flights are included.
Depart Ho Chi Minh
Fly from Phu Quoc to Ho ChI Minh and check-in for your departure flight home.
