Sri Lanka Travel Advice – updated

In response to the recent atrocities in Sri Lanka, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office has updated their advice for travellers.

The Sri Lankan authorities have declared a nationwide State of Emergency. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office advise against all but essential travel to Sri Lanka, due to the current evolving security situation following  the attacks on 21 April 2019. This advice does not apply if transiting Colombo airport, providing that passengers remain airside in the airport.

Background: On 21 April 2019 there were bomb attacks on three churches and on three hotels in Sri Lanka. More than 250 people were killed and over 500 injured.

Security has been stepped up across the island and there are ongoing security operations. These include controlled explosions of suspicious packages and vehicles, and the temporary evacuations of buildings. Such operations may continue for a number of weeks.

Travellers who remain in Sri Lanka are advised to follow the advice of the local authorities, hotel security staff and local tour companies. Passengers should expect extra security checks at public buildings and at airports.

The Sri Lankan authorities have declared a nationwide State of Emergency. Avoid crowded public areas and gatherings/demonstrations and monitor local media for developments: you should plan your movements carefully and not to travel out if curfews are in place.

Social media may also be disrupted at times.  Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger, along with YouTube, Viber, and Snapchat, were all quickly blocked by the Sri Lankan authorities immediately after the attacks because of concerns that social media could be used to spread misinformation or to incite further violence.

Revealed Travel remains in contact with our ground agents in Sri Lanka to ensure that our  passengers are safe. We are contacting travellers who are due to travel to the country in the coming months.
